(A) is false, but (R) is true.
Show Answer
Assertion is true: West Bengal, Bihar, Assam and Odisha are the leading jute producers. Reason is false: jute grows well on the well-drained fertile alluvial soils of the flood plains (Ganga–Brahmaputra delta); regur (black) soil is found mainly in the Deccan plateau – Maharashtra, Saurashtra, Malwa, Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh.
Jute = alluvial soil of the delta; regur = black soil of the Deccan (cotton).

A dam is a barrier across flowing water that obstructs, directs or retards the flow, often creating a reservoir, lake or impoundment. “Dam” refers to the reservoir rather than the structure. Most dams have a section called a spillway or weir over which or through which it is intended that water will flow either intermittently or continuously. Dams are classified according to structure, intended purpose or height. Based on structure and the materials used, dams are classified as timber dams, embankment dams or masonry dams, with several subtypes. According to the height, dams can be categorised as large dams and major dams or alternatively as low dams, medium height dams and high dams.

Study the given table carefully and choose the correct option related to Gross Domestic income of the year 2000 :
Income derived from the three sectors of the Economy (₹ crores)
Year | Primary | Secondary | Tertiary
2000 | 52,000 | 48,500 | 1,33,500
2013 | 8,00,500 | 10,74,000 | 38,68,000
- (A) ₹ 1,24,100 करोड़ / ₹ 1,24,100 crores
- (B) ₹ 1,34,100 करोड़ / ₹ 1,34,100 crores
- (C) ₹ 2,24,100 करोड़ / ₹ 2,24,100 crores
- (D) ₹ 2,34,000 करोड़ / ₹ 2,34,000 crores
Show Answer
GDP for 2000 = 52,000 + 48,500 + 1,33,500 = ₹ 2,34,000 crore (sum of the production of all three sectors).
Add only the three sectors of the asked year; check the lakh-crore commas carefully.

To provide subsidies to domestic producers.
Show Answer
After independence, industries in India were just coming up, and competition from imports would not have allowed them to grow. So the government restricted foreign trade and investment to protect domestic producers.

Explain with examples the differences between the public and private sectors of the Indian Economy.
Show Answer
- Ownership: in the public sector the government owns most of the assets, while in the private sector assets are owned by individuals or companies.
- Motive: private sector activities are guided by the motive to earn profits, while the public sector aims at the welfare of the people.
- Activities needing very large spending, like building dams, are generally not taken up by the private sector but are undertaken by the public sector.
- Infrastructure such as roads, bridges, railways and harbours is developed by the public sector because it has access to huge funds that the private sector lacks.
- The private sector does not provide many things society needs at a reasonable cost, whereas the public sector does (e.g. cheap electricity, food grains through ration shops).
- Many activities, such as health and education, are a primary responsibility of the government, so the public sector must undertake them; the private sector is not bound to do so.
- Examples: Reliance Industries and Tata Iron and Steel Company (TISCO) are private sector enterprises; BHEL and Bharat Electronics are public sector enterprises.
Scheme: any five points to be explained (5 × 1 mark). Present as a two-column table if allowed, and name at least one example of each sector.
Explain with examples the difference between the organized and unorganised sectors of the Indian Economy.
Show Answer
- Terms of employment: the organised sector covers enterprises or workplaces where the terms of employment are regular, e.g. a government office or a large factory; in the unorganised sector they are not regular, e.g. a daily-wage construction labourer.
- Registration and laws: organised sector units are registered by the government and must follow rules given in laws such as the Factories Act, Minimum Wages Act, Payment of Gratuity Act and Shops and Establishments Act; unorganised sector units do not follow these rules strictly.
- Procedures: the organised sector follows formal processes and procedures, while the unorganised sector does not.
- Job security: workers in the organised sector enjoy security of employment, while there is no such security in the unorganised sector.
- Working hours: the organised sector has fixed working hours and pays for overtime, whereas the unorganised sector has no fixed working hours.
- Medical benefits: organised sector workers get medical benefits, while such facilities may not be available in the unorganised sector.
- (Extra NCERT point) Organised sector workers also get paid leave, holidays, provident fund, gratuity and pension; unorganised sector workers, such as street vendors, small shop workers and domestic helpers, get none of these and are mostly in small, scattered units outside government control.
Scheme: any five points to be explained (5 × 1 mark). Write each point as a contrast (organised … whereas unorganised …) and give an example.

Read the given source carefully and answer the questions that follow :
Besides banks, the other major source of cheap credit in rural areas are the cooperative societies (or cooperatives). Members of a cooperative pool their resources for cooperation in certain areas. There are several types of cooperatives possible such as farmers cooperatives, weavers cooperatives, industrial workers cooperatives, etc. Krishak Cooperative functions in a village not very far away from Sonpur. It has 2300 farmers as members. It accepts deposits from its members. With these deposits as collateral, the Cooperative has obtained a large loan from the bank. These funds are used to provide loans to members. Once these loans are repaid, another round of lending can take place.
Krishak Cooperative provides loans for the purchase of agricultural implements, loans for cultivation and agricultural trade, fishery loans, loans for construction of houses and for a variety of other expenses.
