- Planned location of settlements: Nageshwar and Balakot were set up near sources of shell, and Shortughai near lapis lazuli.
- Uniformity of artefacts: pottery, seals, weights and bricks were standardised across the region; brick ratio (1:2:4) was the same from Jammu to Gujarat.
- Mobilisation of labour: large numbers of workers made bricks and built massive walls and platforms.
- Town planning: at Mohenjodaro, streets with drains were laid out first and houses built later, which needed prior planning.

- By material: stone, clay, metal, bone, ivory, etc.
- By function: tool, ornament, both, or for ritual use.
- By context: where it was found (house, drain, grave, kiln) to understand its use.
- Indirect evidence: comparing with present-day objects, e.g. spindle whorls indicating spinning.
What is your understanding of the layers excavated at Indus Valley sites? Elaborate.
Show Answer
- Sites were reoccupied repeatedly (often after Indus floods), forming layers one above another.
- Occupation layers are identified by colour, texture and artefacts; layers without such traces are sterile layers, showing abandonment.
- Usually the lowest layer is the oldest and the highest the most recent; this study is stratigraphy.
- Artefacts from layers are assigned to cultural periods, giving the site's cultural sequence; e.g. seals at Harappa were found in layers far older than Early Historic levels, revealing their significance.

- Charred grains: archaeo-botanists identified wheat, barley, lentil, chickpea, sesame, millets (Gujarat) and rice.
- Animal bones: cattle, sheep, goat, buffalo and pig were domesticated (archaeo-zoologists); wild boar, deer, gharial and fish bones also found.
- Plough evidence: bulls on seals; terracotta plough models from Cholistan and Banawali; a ploughed field at Kalibangan.
- Irrigation: canals at Shortughai, reservoirs at Dholavira, and wells.

- (a) Rulers such as the Satavahanas, Shakas and Kushanas projected themselves as divine, so that their authority could not be questioned and would inspire awe.
- (b-1) Kushanas installed colossal statues of themselves, e.g. in the shrine at Mat near Mathura, and in Afghanistan, to appear godlike.
- (b-2) Many Kushana rulers took the title devaputra (son of god), possibly inspired by Chinese rulers.
- (b-3) Gupta rulers had poets compose prashastis, e.g. Harishena's Prayaga Prashasti comparing Samudragupta to gods.
State any three sources historians use to reconstruct the history of the Mauryan empire.

- Archaeology: finds from excavations, especially sculpture.
- Contemporary accounts: Megasthenes (Greek envoy to Chandragupta), surviving in fragments, and the Arthashastra attributed to Kautilya/Chanakya.
- Later literature: Buddhist, Jaina and Puranic texts and Sanskrit literature.
- Asokan inscriptions on rocks and pillars, regarded as the most valuable source.
Elaborate with examples how inequality and human suffering were facts of life in the age of the Mahabharata.
Show Answer
- Gotra rules: members of the same gotra could not marry, and women took their husband's gotra after marriage.
- Unequal property rights: per the Manusmriti, paternal estate was divided among sons with a special share for the eldest; women could not claim it and had only stridhana.
- Patriliny: succession passed from father to son, so sons were desired and daughters held a secondary place.
- Low status of women: unequal access to resources sharpened gender differences, e.g. Draupadi staked in the game of dice.
- Birth-based varna: the Dharmasutras/Dharmashastras fixed status by birth, so Shudras could not rise.
- Restricted occupations: ‘ideal’ occupations were fixed for each varna; the Ekalavya story shows those considered low were denied learning.
- Untouchability: chandalas lived outside the village, used discarded utensils, wore clothes of the dead and iron ornaments and handled corpses; Fa Xian noted they had to sound a clapper in the streets so that people could avoid seeing them.
- Slaves and landless labourers: slaves, landless labourers and debtors lived hard lives.
Discuss non-Kshatriya kings and the practices through which they challenged Brahmanical ideas of society.
Show Answer
- Brahmanical ideal: only Kshatriyas could be kings, yet many major dynasties came from other groups.
- Mauryas: Buddhist texts call them Kshatriyas; Brahmanical texts describe them as of ‘low’ origin.
- Shungas and Kanvas, successors of the Mauryas, were Brahmanas.
- Shakas from Central Asia were regarded as mlechchhas, yet Rudradaman repaired Sudarshana lake and issued a Sanskrit inscription, showing ‘outsiders’ adopting Sanskritic traditions.
- Satavahana Gotami-puta Siri-Satakani called himself a unique Brahmana and destroyer of Kshatriya pride, and claimed to prevent intermarriage among the four varnas.
- Yet the Satavahanas married into Shaka (‘mlechchha’) families; political needs overrode textual rules.
- Endogamy: Satavahana queens bore names from their fathers' gotras (Gotami, Vasithi), showing they kept their fathers' gotras after marriage, and some queens shared the same gotra. This points to endogamy, against the Brahmanical rule of exogamy.
- Conclusion: kingship depended on resources, power and support, not on birth alone.
‘The Mahabharata is a great source to study kinship values of ancient times.’ Justify.
Show Answer
- Family and kinfolk: families were part of larger kin networks; members shared food, resources and rituals. Definitions of kin vary across societies, e.g. whether cousins count as blood relations.
- Central story is about kin: a feud over land and power between two sets of cousins, Kauravas and Pandavas, of the Kuru lineage ruling a janapada.
- Ideal of patriliny: after the Pandava victory, patrilineal succession was proclaimed; the story reinforces sons' claim to fathers' resources, including the throne.
- Variations: sometimes brothers or other kinsmen succeeded; in exceptional cases women like Prabhavati Gupta exercised power.
- Gandhari advised Duryodhana against war, showing a mother's moral voice within kin relations.
- Polyandry: Draupadi's marriage to the five Pandavas suggests polyandry may have existed among some elites, later explained in various ways.
- Marriage rules such as exogamy, kanyadana and gotra norms illustrate kinship ideals.
Describe the elements historians consider while analysing the Mahabharata, with reference to V.S. Sukthankar's critical edition.
Show Answer
- Language: Prakrit, Pali, Tamil or Sanskrit; the Mahabharata's Sanskrit is simpler than Vedic, so it was widely understood.
- Kind of text: mantras for ritual specialists, or stories read, heard and retold; the Mahabharata has narrative and didactic sections.
- Author and audience: traditionally attributed to Vyasa; originally perhaps sung by sutas (charioteer-bards), later written down by Brahmanas.
- Date and place: the text grew over about 1,000 years from c. 500 BCE.
- Sukthankar's project (1919): dozens of scholars under V.S. Sukthankar began a critical edition.
- Method: Sanskrit manuscripts in many scripts were collected from across India, verses compared and common ones selected; the work took 47 years.
- Two findings: (1) common elements in manuscripts from Kashmir and Nepal to Kerala and Tamil Nadu showed the story's spread; (2) huge regional variations, recorded in footnotes and appendices, filling more than half of the 13,000 pages.
- Significance: these variations reflect complex processes of dialogue between Brahmanical norms and local traditions.

This Buddhist text, part of the Sutta Pitaka, is a collection of verses composed by bhikkhunis. Punna, a dasi (slave woman), went to the river each morning to fetch water for her master's household, where she saw a Brahmana performing bathing rituals. One morning she spoke to him:
“I am a water carrier: even in the cold I have always gone down to the water, frightened of punishment or the angry words of high-class women. So what are you afraid of, Brahmana, that makes you go down to the water though your limbs shake with the bitter cold?”
The Brahmana: “I am doing good to prevent evil; anyone young or old who has done something bad is freed by washing in water.”
Punna: “Whoever told you you are freed from evil by washing in water? In that case all the frogs and turtles would go to heaven, and so would the water snakes and crocodiles! (Instead) don't do that thing, the fear of which leads you to the water. Stop now, Brahmana! Save your skin from the cold…”

Punna had to fetch water daily even in bitter cold, fearing punishment and the angry words of high-class women, which shows the harsh life of slaves and social hierarchy.

This excerpt from the Sutta Pitaka contains the Buddha's advice to a wealthy householder, Sigala:
“In five ways should a master look after his servants and employees… by assigning them work according to their strength, by supplying them with food and wages, by tending them in sickness, by sharing delicacies with them and by granting leave at times…
In five ways should the clansmen look after the needs of samanas (those who have renounced the world) and Brahmanas: by affection in act and speech and mind, by keeping open house to them and supplying their worldly needs.”
There are similar instructions to Sigala about how to behave with his parents, teacher and wife.

What would the Buddha have advised about parents and teachers?

In the same spirit the Buddha would advise respecting and serving parents, meeting their needs and upholding family traditions, and honouring teachers, serving them and learning attentively. For him social relations rested on mutual duty, compassion and right conduct, not ritual.
Give three reasons why Ibn Battuta's account differs greatly from Al-Biruni's.
Show Answer
- Period: Al-Biruni came in the 11th century (time of Mahmud of Ghazni); Ibn Battuta in the 14th (Muhammad bin Tughlaq).
- Focus: Al-Biruni analysed religion, philosophy and caste through Sanskrit texts; Ibn Battuta vividly described cities, markets, the postal system, novelties like coconut and paan, and slaves.
- Experience and style: Ibn Battuta travelled widely across Asia and Africa, served as qazi in Delhi and wrote the Rihla from his experiences; Al-Biruni's Kitab-ul-Hind is a scholar's systematic treatise.
How did Al-Biruni overcome the problems in understanding India? Which sources helped him?
Show Answer
- Al-Biruni identified three barriers: (1) Sanskrit, so different from Arabic and Persian; (2) difference in religious beliefs; (3) insularity of the local people.
- To overcome them he learnt Sanskrit and translated several Sanskrit works into Arabic.
- Sources: he relied almost exclusively on Brahmanical works: the Vedas, Puranas, Bhagavad Gita, works of Patanjali and the Manusmriti.
- Hence his picture of Indian society, especially caste, was text-based and normative; real social life was less rigid.

From Jahanara's biography of Shaikh Muinuddin Chishti, Munis al Arwah:
“After praising the one God… this lowly faqira (humble soul) Jahanara… went from the capital Agra in the company of my great father (Emperor Shah Jahan) towards the pure region of incomparable Ajmer… I was committed to this idea, that every day in every station I would perform two cycles of optional prayer…
For several days… I did not sleep on a leopard skin at night, I did not extend my feet in the direction of the blessed sanctuary of the revered saving master, and I did not turn my back towards him. I passed the days beneath the trees.
On Thursday, the fourth of the blessed month of Ramzan… I rubbed my pale face with the dust of that threshold. From the doorway to the blessed tomb I went barefoot, kissing the ground. Having entered the dome, I went around the light-filled tomb of my master seven times… Finally, with my own hand I put the finest quality of itar on the perfumed tomb of the revered one, and having taken off the rose scarf that I had on my head, I placed it on the top of the blessed tomb…”

In 1039 Abu'l Hasan al-Hujwiri, a native of Hujwir near Ghazni, was forced to cross the Indus as a captive of the invading Turkish army. He settled in Lahore and wrote a book in Persian, the Kashf-ul-Mahjub (Unveiling of the Veiled), to explain tasawwuf and the Sufis.
Hujwiri died in 1073 and was buried in Lahore. The grandson of Sultan Mahmud of Ghazni built a tomb over his grave, which became a pilgrimage site, especially on his death anniversary.
Even today Hujwiri is revered as Data Ganj Bakhsh (Giver who bestows treasures) and his mausoleum is called Data Darbar (Court of the Giver).

‘In the constant struggle for power, the forts and fortified settlements of Vijayanagara played a significant role in resisting invasions.’ Discuss.
Show Answer
- Three lines of fortification: Abdur Razzaq mentions seven lines of forts. The first wall encircled the city with its agricultural hinterland and forests, the second the urban core, the third the royal centre, where each major building had its own high wall.
- Withstanding sieges: medieval sieges aimed to starve defenders and could last months or years. Enclosing fields and tanks within the walls let Vijayanagara survive long sieges, while other rulers relied only on granaries.
- Strong construction: walls of interlocking stone without mortar, gateways with bastions and arches. Visitors had to pass heavy fortifications before reaching the core, deterring invaders.
‘The rulers of Vijayanagara innovated and developed new traditions in the Virupaksha temple.’ Examine.
Show Answer
- The Virupaksha temple grew over centuries; the earliest shrine dated to the 9th–10th centuries but was greatly enlarged under Vijayanagara.
- Krishnadeva Raya built the hall in front of the main shrine to mark his accession and the eastern gopuram, so the central shrine became a small part of the complex.
- New features: towering gopurams (royal gateways) signalling royal power from afar; mandapas where deities watched music, dance and drama, were married and swung; and long pillared corridors around shrines.
Discuss the aspects of overseas trade in India between the 16th and 18th centuries and its impact on the economy.
Show Answer
- Political stability of the Mughal, Ming (China), Safavid (Iran) and Ottoman (Turkey) empires expanded overland and maritime trade from China to the Mediterranean.
- Europeans: voyages of discovery and the opening of the Americas expanded Europe–Asia trade greatly.
- Silver inflow: huge amounts of silver bullion came to pay for Indian goods, good for India, which had no natural silver.
- Monetisation: unprecedented expansion of minting and circulation; the silver rupiya was stable and widely available.
- Cash revenue: the Mughal state could collect taxes and revenue in cash.
- Villages linked to markets: Giovanni Careri (1690) wrote that the world's silver ends up in India; villages were drawn into cash crops (cotton, sugarcane, indigo, oilseeds) and town markets.
- Barter and overland trade: barter continued in some areas; the Lohanis of Punjab traded overland with Afghanistan.
- Impact: commercialisation of agriculture, cash crops and crafts grew, and the rural economy was linked to world markets.
Explain the caste- and gender-based inequalities in India in the 16th–18th centuries.
Show Answer
- Caste inequality: despite abundant land, certain castes were confined to menial tasks and kept in poverty.
- Among Muslims, menials like the halalkhoran (scavengers) lived outside the village; the mallahzadas (sons of boatmen) of Bihar were comparable to slaves.
- Panchayats: in mixed-caste villages the panchayat represented various castes, but the village menial-cum-labourer was unlikely to be included; jati panchayats controlled their members.
- Mobility: some castes (Ahirs, Gujars, Malis) rose through cattle-rearing and horticulture, but most lower castes had no such route.
- Women's labour: women sowed, weeded, threshed and winnowed, spun yarn, prepared clay and embroidered, yet their labour was undervalued.
- Menstrual taboos: in western India menstruating women could not touch the plough or potter's wheel; in Bengal they could not enter betel-leaf groves.
- Health and control: high female mortality (malnutrition, frequent pregnancies, childbirth); men of family and community controlled women and punished suspected infidelity harshly.
- Exceptions: some women, especially in zamindar families (e.g. Bengal), inherited land and ran zamindaris; women also petitioned panchayats on divorce or remarriage.
‘Land revenue was the economic mainstay of the Mughal empire.’ Examine with reference to agriculture.
Show Answer
- Administrative apparatus: the state built machinery to control production and assess and collect revenue across the empire.
- Diwan's office: the diwan supervised the fiscal system; revenue officials and record-keepers penetrated the agrarian domain and shaped agrarian relations.
- Information first: the state gathered information on the extent and produce of land before fixing taxes.
- Two stages: assessment (jama) and actual collection (hasil); the state tried to maximise its claims.
- Measurement: Akbar had cultivated and cultivable land measured in each province; later emperors continued, e.g. Aurangzeb's 1665 order.
- Classification: Akbar classified land as polaj, parauti, chachar and banjar, with different rates for each.
- Cash or kind: peasants paid in cash or kind; the state encouraged cash crops (jins-i-kamil) that yielded more revenue.
- Link with mansabdari: mansabdars were paid through jagirs (revenue assignments), so the whole military-administrative system rested on land revenue.
‘Despite its limitations, the Ain-i Akbari remains an extraordinary document of its time.’ Validate.
Show Answer
- Introduction: compiled by Abu'l Fazl at Akbar's order, completed in 1598, as the third volume of the Akbar Nama.
- Five daftars: (1) manzil-abadi: imperial household; (2) sipah-abadi: military and civil administration with sketches of mansabdars, scholars, poets, artists; (3) mulk-abadi: revenue rates and the ‘Account of Twelve Provinces’; (4–5) religious, literary and cultural traditions and Akbar's ‘auspicious sayings’.
- Quantitative data on produce, revenue, zamindar castes, troops and forts, rare for the age.
- Limitation 1: numerous errors in totalling (though minor).
- Limitation 2: data not collected uniformly; e.g. caste composition of zamindars is missing for Bengal and Orissa.
- Limitation 3: fiscal data are rich but prices and wages are poorly documented, mainly from around Agra.
- Still extraordinary: it gives glimpses of the empire's structure and of people, professions, trade and nobility, helping historians reconstruct the social fabric, and it set a benchmark for later works.
‘The East India Company commissioned Buchanan with specific instructions on what to look for and record.’ Justify with three arguments.
Show Answer
- Search for resources: Buchanan observed rocks, soil strata, minerals and stones; the Company sought resources it could control and exploit commercially.
- Transforming the landscape: he suggested how land could be made productive, which crops to grow, which trees to cut or plant, and saw forest dwellers' lives as ‘backward’.
- Survey team: he travelled with draughtsmen, surveyors, palanquin bearers and coolies at the Company's expense; his reports guided its investment, revenue and profit decisions.
What do you understand by Damin-i-Koh? How did it come into being?
Show Answer
- Meaning: by 1832 a large area at the foothills of the Rajmahal hills was demarcated as the land of the Santhals, called Damin-i-Koh.
- Origin: the Paharias refused to take up the plough, while the Santhals were good settlers who cleared forests and ploughed, so the British gave them land.
- Conditions: the Santhals had to live within it, practise plough agriculture and clear at least one-tenth of the area in ten years; it was surveyed, mapped and fenced with boundary pillars.
- Results: villages rose from 40 (1838) to 1,473 (1851) and population from 3,000 to over 82,000; revenue grew, but high taxes, moneylenders' interest and zamindars' pressure led to the Santhal revolt of 1855-56.
Give three differences between the roles of zamindars and jotedars under the Permanent Settlement in Bengal.
Show Answer
- Position: zamindars were responsible to the Company for revenue and controlled many villages; jotedars were rich peasants holding thousands of acres.
- Residence and influence: zamindars often lived in towns; jotedars lived in villages and directly controlled poor villagers.
- Power: heavy revenue demands and the ‘sunset law’ weakened many zamindars, whose estates were auctioned; jotedars grew strong through moneylending and trade, used sharecroppers (adhiyars/bargadars), resisted paying zamindars and often bought zamindars' estates at auctions.
Describe how the British turned the Santhals into settled agriculturists in the 19th century.

- Santhals came to Bengal from the 1780s; zamindars hired them to clear forests and extend cultivation.
- Having failed to make the Paharias take up the plough, the British gave the Santhals land in the Rajmahal foothills.
- In 1832 Damin-i-Koh was demarcated, requiring settled plough cultivation and one-tenth of the land to be tilled within ten years; the Santhals gave up their mobile life and settled.
‘The sepoys were the makers of their own rebellion.’ Give three examples in support.

- Sepoy panchayats: Charles Ball noted nightly panchayats in the Kanpur lines where decisions were taken collectively.
- Communication between cantonments: the 7th Awadh Irregular Cavalry, refusing the cartridges, wrote to the 48th Native Infantry that ‘they had acted for the faith and awaited the 48th's orders’; emissaries moved between stations.
- Choosing leaders: rebels turned to pre-British rulers such as Bahadur Shah Zafar, Nana Saheb and Begum Hazrat Mahal, often compelling them to lead.

‘The 20th-century national movement drew inspiration from 1857.’ Write three lessons its leaders learnt.
Show Answer
- Hindu–Muslim unity: both fought together; proclamations (e.g. in Bahadur Shah's name) appealed to fight under the standards of both Muhammad and Mahavir.
- Participation of all classes: sepoys, peasants, taluqdars, artisans and rulers joined; only a mass movement could challenge the British.
- Organisation and spread: the revolt did not cover the whole country and lacked central planning, so the British crushed it; a nationwide organised movement was needed. 1857 was remembered as the ‘First War of Independence’ to build national feeling.
The rumours of 1857 made sense in the context of British policies from the late 1820s. Support with evidence.

- From Governor-General Lord William Bentinck's time the British set out to ‘reform’ Indian society through Western education, ideas and institutions, setting up English-medium schools, colleges and universities.
- Sati was abolished (1829) and Hindu widow remarriage legalised (1856); people feared an attack on their religion and customs.
- Under Dalhousie, Jhansi, Satara and Awadh were annexed through the Doctrine of Lapse or on grounds of ‘misgovernment’, and British administration and courts imposed.
- So rumours of bone-dust in flour and greased cartridges were believed as part of a larger plan to destroy caste and religion and convert Indians to Christianity.
‘The annexation of Awadh displaced not just the Nawab but also dispossessed the taluqdars, causing the breakdown of an entire social order.’ Critically examine.

- Exile of the Nawab: Wajid Ali Shah was dethroned in 1856 on grounds of ‘misgovernment’ and exiled to Calcutta; people's attachment to him made this an emotional blow.
- End of court culture: musicians, dancers, poets, artisans, cooks, retainers and officials lost their livelihoods.
- Taluqdars dispossessed: their forts were destroyed, armies disbanded and much of their land taken under the Summary Settlement (1856).
- Sepoys and peasants: many sepoys came from Awadh peasant families hit by high revenue and low pay; a chain of grievances linked prince, taluqdar, peasant and sepoy, making Awadh the centre of the fiercest revolt.
‘The mutiny quickly became a rebellion.’ Explain with examples how the sepoys organised themselves in 1857.
Show Answer
- Similar pattern: in cantonment after cantonment, on a signal (evening gun or bugle) sepoys seized arms, attacked British officers, looted the treasury, then attacked jails, telegraph offices, record rooms and government buildings.
- Communication: emissaries moved between stations, e.g. the 7th Awadh Cavalry's letter to the 48th Infantry.
- Panchayats and leaders: nightly panchayats at Kanpur; rebels turned to old rulers (Bahadur Shah in Delhi, Nana Saheb in Kanpur, Begum Hazrat Mahal in Lucknow), drawing in common people, peasants and zamindars.

- Harsh laws: in May–June 1857 several Acts brought North India under martial law.
- Special powers: military officers and even ordinary Britons could try and punish Indians suspected of rebellion.
- Single punishment: death was the only penalty for rebellion; ordinary legal processes were suspended.
- Two-pronged campaign: reinforcements came from Britain; Delhi was attacked from Calcutta and from Punjab, and recaptured in September 1857.
- Bahadur Shah was tried and exiled to Rangoon; his sons were killed.
- Awadh: facing stiff resistance, the British combined force with diplomacy, promising landholders their estates back to detach them from the revolt.
- Collective punishment: rebel villages were burnt and people hanged publicly to spread terror.
- Communications: telegraph and railways moved troops and news fast; by 1858 the revolt was crushed.

- First War of Independence: nationalists in the 20th century celebrated 1857 as the first war of independence in which all classes fought imperial rule together.
- Paintings: Rani Lakshmibai was shown as a heroic figure on horseback, sword in one hand, reins in the other.
- Poems and songs: Subhadra Kumari Chauhan's ‘Khoob ladi mardani…’ and folk songs spread her memory.
- Heroes: Tatya Tope, Nana Saheb, Kunwar Singh and Begum Hazrat Mahal were celebrated as patriotic heroes who inspired people.
- Symbol of unity: the revolt was remembered as a symbol of Hindu–Muslim unity and resistance to injustice.
- Counter to British images: British art showed the British as saviours and rebels as brutal; nationalist images made rebels into patriots, as did writings like V.D. Savarkar's The Indian War of Independence, 1857.

- Autobiographies give vivid pictures but rely on memory and self-image.
- Government records such as police reports and fortnightly reports are useful but written from the British viewpoint, often downplaying the movement.
- Newspapers in English and Indian languages report events but had political leanings.
- Images, posters and photographs show public mood and events.

Gandhiji encouraged communicating the nationalist message in the mother tongue rather than the rulers' language. Analyse how he knitted the Non-Cooperation Movement with this philosophy.
Show Answer
- Reaching the people: Gandhiji believed a struggle succeeds only when people understand its aims, best done in their mother tongue.
- BHU speech (1916): he objected to speeches in English and said the Indian elite was cut off from the poor.
- Self-confidence: the British considered their language superior; using mother tongues built Indians' self-respect.
- Non-Cooperation–Khilafat (1920): linking the two, he sought to unite Hindus and Muslims.
- Boycott: students left government schools and colleges, lawyers boycotted courts, workers struck in many towns.
- Local interpretation: peasants, tribals and workers understood and acted on ‘non-cooperation’ in their own languages and ways, e.g. hill tribes in Andhra defied forest laws and Awadh peasants stopped paying taxes.
- Result: for the first time since 1857 British rule was shaken; the movement became one of millions of peasants, workers and artisans.

- Background: Gandhiji returned from South Africa in January 1915 after his satyagraha experience.
- BHU speech (Feb 1916): he contrasted the ‘richly bedecked noblemen’ with the absent ‘millions of the poor’ and said India's salvation lay with the farmer, not lawyers, doctors or landlords.
- Champaran (1917): he sought security of tenure and freedom to grow crops of their choice for indigo peasants in Bihar.
- Ahmedabad (1918): he intervened in a labour dispute for better conditions for textile mill workers.
- Kheda (1918): he backed peasants' demand for remission of taxes after harvest failure.
- Simple life: though a merchant by caste and lawyer by profession, his simplicity, manual work and symbols like dhoti and charkha brought him close to the labouring poor.
- Conclusion: these campaigns made him a nationalist who cared for the poor; the Rowlatt Satyagraha (1919) made him a national leader.

- Simple life and symbols: dhoti, charkha and simple food linked him with the poor; people called him ‘Mahatma’ and ‘Gandhi Baba’.
- Peasant and worker campaigns: Champaran, Kheda and Ahmedabad took up ordinary people's grievances.
- Popular faith and rumours: stories of his miraculous powers spread; local leaders and new Congress branches took his message to villages, and he spoke in Hindi and regional languages.
Critically examine how Mahatma Gandhi's arrival changed the nature of the Indian national movement.
Show Answer
- Earlier: before 1915 Congress was largely an organisation of educated urban professionals.
- Mass movement: by 1922 Gandhiji had turned nationalism into a movement of peasants, workers and artisans.
- Satyagraha and non-violence: peaceful defiance of unjust laws and boycott (Rowlatt, Non-Cooperation, Salt Satyagraha).
- Organisation: Congress branches spread to villages, linguistic provincial committees were formed, and membership fees reduced.
- Social reform: abolition of untouchability, Hindu–Muslim unity and khadi self-reliance became part of the struggle.
- New supporters: industrialists like G.D. Birla, women and students joined in large numbers.
- Limits: sudden withdrawal after Chauri Chaura (1922) disappointed many; Ambedkar differed on Dalit questions; unity efforts could not prevent Partition.
- Conclusion: despite limits, he made the national movement a true mass movement.
Explain the perspectives discussed in the Constituent Assembly (1946–50) about the depressed castes.
Show Answer
- Separate electorates: Ambedkar had demanded them during the national movement; Gandhiji opposed them as they would segregate the depressed castes permanently.
- Beyond reservation: members like J. Nagappa and K.J. Khandekar argued the depressed castes were not few in number but systematically marginalised, deprived of education and jobs; society's attitudes had to change.
- Decisions: untouchability was abolished, Hindu temples opened to all castes, and seats reserved in legislatures and government jobs. The Assembly accepted that constitutional rights alone were not enough; social attitudes had to change.

During the debate on 27 August 1947, Govind Ballabh Pant said:
“I believe separate electorates will be suicidal to minorities and will do them tremendous harm. If they are isolated forever, they can never convert themselves into a majority and the feeling of frustration will cripple them even from the very beginning. What is it that you desire and what is our ultimate objective? Do the minorities always want to remain as minorities or do they ever expect to form an integral part of a great nation and as such guide and control its destinies? If they do, can they ever achieve that aspiration and that ideal if they are isolated from the rest of the community? … The minorities if they are returned by separate electorates can never have any effective voice.”
What idea of separate electorates was Pant opposing?
Show Answer
Separate electorates meant constituencies reserved for a religious community (e.g. Muslims) where only voters of that community elected their representatives, introduced by the British from 1909.
Why did Pant call separate electorates ‘suicidal’ for minorities?
Show Answer
Because they would be permanently isolated, never part of a majority, without an effective voice, and crippled by frustration.
What counter-arguments did B. Pocker Bahadur give in favour of separate electorates?
Show Answer
B. Pocker Bahadur of Madras argued separate electorates would give minorities meaningful representation, since the majority could not understand their needs, so their voice must be heard in governance. Minorities exist everywhere and cannot be wished away; they need a secure place in the political system.

Govind Ballabh Pant argued that to become loyal citizens people had to stop focusing only on the community and the self:
“For the success of democracy one must train himself in the art of self-discipline. In democracies one should care less for himself and more for others. There cannot be any divided loyalty. All loyalties must exclusively be centred round the State. If in a democracy you create rival loyalties, or you create a system in which any individual or group, instead of suppressing his extravagance, cares nought for larger or other interests, then democracy is doomed.”
Why did Pant stress self-discipline?
Show Answer
Because democracy succeeds only when citizens rise above personal and community interest and value others and the nation.
What was considered essential for democracy's success?
Show Answer
Undivided loyalty centred on the State, with citizens caring more for others than for themselves.
Give your views on ‘in democracies one should care less for himself and more for others’.
Show Answer
This philosophy rests on cooperation, tolerance and civic duty. After Partition, Pant wanted communal or narrow identities not to override loyalty to the nation. It remains relevant: democracy is strong when public good comes before private gain. The Constitution also protected minorities' cultural rights, valuing both unity and diversity.

Why were the ideals of the Objectives Resolution used to frame the Constitution?
Show Answer

(OR) Name two groups whose authority would be challenged by the Resolution's ideals.
Show Answer
(1) Rulers of princely states, since a republic based on popular sovereignty undermined hereditary monarchy; (2) zamindars/jagirdars and dominant upper castes, since equality, abolition of untouchability and socio-economic justice challenged their privileges. (Also colonial British authority.)
