Find which pair is not correctly matched:
(A) 1921 – Mohenjo-daro   (B) 1921 – Harappa   (C) 1955 – Lothal   (D) 1990 – Dholavira

  1. (A) 1921 – मोहनजोदड़ो / 1921 – Mohenjo-daro
  2. (B) 1921 – हड़प्पा / 1921 – Harappa
  3. (C) 1955 – लोथल / 1955 – Lothal
  4. (D) 1990 – धौलावीरा / 1990 – Dholavira
Show Answer

NCERT (Ch 1 timeline): Daya Ram Sahni began excavating Harappa in 1921; Mohenjo-daro excavations began in 1922 (R.D. Banerji); S.R. Rao began at Lothal in 1955 and R.S. Bisht at Dholavira in 1990. So Lothal (1955) is correct; the wrong pair is (A) Mohenjo-daro–1921.

Assertion (A): The Harappan Civilisation is also known as the Indus Valley Civilisation.
Reason (R): Most important Harappan sites have been found along the Ganga and its tributaries.

  1. (A) A और R दोनों सत्य हैं, और R, A की सही व्याख्या है / Both A and R are true, and R is the correct explanation of A
  2. (B) A और R दोनों सत्य हैं, पर R, A की सही व्याख्या नहीं है / Both A and R are true, but R is not the correct explanation of A
  3. (C) A सत्य है, पर R असत्य है / A is true, but R is false
  4. (D) A असत्य है, पर R सत्य है / A is false, but R is true
Show Answer
✅ सही उत्तर / Answer: (C) A सत्य है, पर R असत्य है / A is true, but R is false

A सत्य है।

A is true. R is false: most sites lie in the Indus and Ghaggar-Hakra (Saraswati) valleys, not the Ganga valley. That is why it is called the ‘Indus Valley Civilisation’.

How do Mesopotamian texts describe Meluhha (possibly the Harappan region)?

  1. (A) भारतीय / Indians
  2. (B) दिव्य स्थान / Divine place
  3. (C) शिल्पकारों का क्षेत्र / Region of craftsmen
  4. (D) नाविकों का देश / (Land of) seafarers
Show Answer

Identify the image:

  1. (A) इंडो-यूनानियों का एक सिक्का / A coin of the Indo-Greeks
  2. (B) हड़प्पा मुहर / A Harappan seal
  4. (D) हड़प्पा सिक्का / A Harappan coin
Show Answer

This silver coin has symbols (sun, elephant, tree etc.) punched with separate dies, so it is a punch-marked coin, in use from about the 6th century BCE (NCERT Ch 2). No coins have been found at Harappan sites.

Match:
A. The world is transient   B. The world is soulless   C. The world is full of sorrow   D. The path of moderation
1. Self-punishment   2. Anatta   3. Anicca   4. Dukkha

  1. (A) 1, 2, 3, 4 / 1, 2, 3, 4
  2. (B) 2, 1, 4, 3 / 2, 1, 4, 3
  3. (C) 3, 2, 4, 1 / 3, 2, 4, 1
  4. (D) 3, 2, 1, 4 / 3, 2, 1, 4
Show Answer

Transient = anicca, soulless = anatta, sorrowful = dukkha, so (C). Note: the Buddha's middle path avoids both indulgence and self-mortification; pairing it with ‘self-punishment’ is conceptually loose, but (C) is the only consistent option.

Answer (English)
  1. Planned cities: towns like Mohenjodaro had a raised Citadel and a Lower Town, streets on a rough grid, and standardised bricks (ratio 1:2:4).
  2. Drainage and water: every house's bathroom drained into covered street drains; Mohenjodaro had about 700 wells, and the Great Bath is unique.
  3. Crafts, trade and seals: beads of carnelian, steatite and shell, metal tools and steatite seals; standard weights regulated trade, with contacts reaching Oman (Magan) and Mesopotamia. The script remains undeciphered.

Analyse the layout and urban planning of Harappan cities. How did water supply, streets, wells, baths and waste disposal improve cleanliness and public health? Give examples.

Show Answer
Answer (English)
  1. Planned layout: at Mohenjodaro streets with drains came first, houses later; streets crossed at right angles, easing movement and ventilation.
  2. Wells and bathrooms: many houses had their own wells (about 700 at Mohenjodaro) and paved bathrooms, giving clean water and personal hygiene.
  3. Covered drains: house drains ran through walls into covered street drains with sumps for cleaning, so water did not stagnate and disease spread less.
  4. Great Bath: waterproofed with bitumen, probably for ritual bathing, showing the importance of purity.
  5. Conclusion: such systems needed planning and civic discipline; these were among the cleanest towns of their age.

Explain Bernier's perception of landownership in India.

Show Answer
Answer (English)
  1. No private property: Bernier held that in Mughal India the emperor owned all land and distributed it among nobles.
  2. Consequences: holders could not pass land to their children, so avoided long-term investment, causing agrarian decline, oppression of peasants and falling living standards except for the elite.
  3. Contrast with Europe: he presented India as Europe's opposite, with no middle class, only a rich elite and poor masses, warning Europe against abandoning private property.
  4. Critique: Mughal records do not show the state as sole owner; Abu'l Fazl calls land revenue a ‘remuneration of sovereignty’. Still, his ideas shaped Montesquieu's ‘oriental despotism’ and Marx's ‘Asiatic mode of production’.

Assess the role of village panchayats in the Mughal period.

Show Answer
Answer (English)
  1. Composition: a council of village elders (usually landholders) headed by the muqaddam or mandal, chosen by consensus and approved by the zamindar; he supervised accounts with the patwari.
  2. Social control: it ensured caste boundaries were kept, could levy fines and impose expulsion for serious offences.
  3. Common fund: used to entertain officials, meet calamities like floods and fund community works such as bunds and canals.
  4. Jati panchayats and petitions: settled disputes over marriage and occupation; in Rajasthan and Maharashtra peasants petitioned panchayats against excessive demands, so panchayats could also check oppression.

Discuss the policies adopted by the British towards the Paharias in Bengal.

Show Answer
Answer (English)
  1. Note: the question says ‘early 18th century’, but these policies belong to the late 18th century (1770s–80s).
  2. Extermination (1770s): Paharias of the Rajmahal hills practised shifting cultivation and hunting and raided plains villages; the British pursued a brutal policy of hunting them down and killing them.
  3. Pacification (1780s): Augustus Cleveland, Collector of Bhagalpur, gave Paharia chiefs annual allowances in return for responsibility for their men's conduct and maintaining order; many refused and withdrew deeper into the hills.
  4. Settling the Santhals: when the Paharias would not take up the plough, the British settled Santhals and demarcated Damin-i-Koh for them in 1832, pushing Paharias deeper into the hills and damaging their livelihood. (Damin-i-Koh was for the Santhals, not the Paharias.)

How did the rebels of 1857 try to realise their vision of unity? Explain briefly.

Show Answer
Answer (English)
  1. Appeal to all: rebel proclamations (ishtahars) called on all sections of society regardless of caste and creed.
  2. Hindu–Muslim unity: proclamations issued by Muslim princes also addressed Hindu sentiments; the one in Bahadur Shah's name urged people to fight under the standards of both Muhammad and Mahavir, recalling Mughal-era coexistence.
  3. Common enemy: the war was presented as one where both communities had equally to lose or gain. In Bareilly (Dec 1857) the British spent Rs 50,000 to incite Hindus against Muslims and failed.

Examine the participation of the taluqdars of Awadh in the revolt of 1857.

Show Answer
Answer (English)
  1. Lost power: after the annexation of Awadh (1856) their armies were disbanded and forts destroyed.
  2. Lost land: the Summary Settlement of 1856 treated taluqdars as interlopers; many lost more than half their estates.
  3. Leadership in the revolt: deprived of power and status, they joined in large numbers; peasants with paternalistic ties followed them, and sepoys were from Awadh villages, linking prince, taluqdar, peasant and sepoy.
  4. Afterwards: the British restored lands to loyal taluqdars to secure their support.

Answer (English)
  1. Sources: Megasthenes' Indika (fragments), Kautilya's Arthashastra, Asokan inscriptions, and Buddhist, Jaina and Puranic literature.
  2. Five political centres: the capital Pataliputra and four provincial centres, Taxila, Ujjayini, Tosali and Suvarnagiri, all with Asokan inscriptions.
  3. Uneven control: a huge, diverse empire (Afghan hills to the Orissa coast) could not be administered uniformly; control was tightest around the capital and provincial centres. Taxila and Ujjayini lay on trade routes; Suvarnagiri (Karnataka) mattered for gold mines.
  4. Communication: land and river routes were vital; journeys took months, and the army needed food and protection.
  5. Military committee: Megasthenes describes a committee with six subcommittees: navy, transport and provisions, foot soldiers, horses, chariots and elephants.
  6. Revenue and officials: officials collected taxes and supervised roads and irrigation; the Arthashastra describes spies and a detailed bureaucracy.
  7. Asoka's dhamma: he appointed dhamma mahamattas and spoke directly to subjects through inscriptions; dhamma included respect for elders, generosity to Brahmanas and renouncers, kindness to slaves and respect for others' religions.
  8. Conclusion: the empire lasted about 150 years; 19th-century historians saw it as centralised, but historians now stress it was not uniform across the subcontinent.

  2. Fertile land: it lay in a region where agriculture was especially productive.
  3. Iron mines (in present-day Jharkhand) were accessible, providing resources for tools and weapons.
  4. Elephants, an important part of the army, were found in the forests of the region.
  5. Communication: the Ganga and its tributaries gave cheap, convenient transport.
  6. Rulers and ministers: early Buddhist and Jaina writers credited ambitious kings such as Bimbisara, Ajatasattu and Mahapadma Nanda, and their ministers.
  7. Secure capitals: first Rajagaha (Rajgir, ‘house of the king’), a fortified settlement among hills; in the 4th century BCE the capital moved to Pataliputra (Patna), commanding routes along the Ganga.
  8. Conclusion: modern historians explain Magadha's rise through a combination of geographic, economic and political factors, not royal valour alone.

Answer (English)
  1. Introduction: rulers linked themselves to deities; temples were centres of power, wealth and devotion. (Note: both temples are in the sacred centre, not the royal centre.)
  2. Virupaksha, the deity: a form of Shiva and guardian deity of the kingdom; rulers ruled on his behalf and signed orders ‘Shri Virupaksha’.
  3. Virupaksha, construction: built over centuries from a 9th–10th century shrine; Krishnadeva Raya built the hall in front of the main shrine to mark his accession, and the eastern gopuram, so the original shrine became a small part of the complex.
  4. Virupaksha, use of halls: some halls held images of gods for special programmes of music, dance and drama; others were for divine marriages and swinging the deities.
  5. Vitthala, the deity: a form of Vishnu worshipped mainly in Maharashtra; its installation shows rulers absorbing regional traditions into an imperial culture.
  6. Vitthala, architecture: several halls and a unique shrine designed as a chariot; chariot streets from the temple gateway, lined with pillared pavilions where merchants set up shops.
  7. Similarities: towering gopurams (royal gateways visible from afar), carved pillared halls and corridors; both built with royal patronage.
  8. Differences: Virupaksha is Shaiva, older and enlarged over time, the guardian deity's shrine; Vitthala is Vaishnava, a regional deity brought in, distinguished by its chariot shrine and chariot streets.
  9. Conclusion: both show Vijayanagara's religious openness, architectural skill and the close link of kingship and religion.

Answer (English)
  1. Structure: a massive platform on one of the highest points of the royal centre, base about 11,000 sq ft, height about 40 ft, probably supporting a wooden structure; the base has relief carvings.
  2. Mahanavami festival: linked with Mahanavami (Dussehra/Navaratri, Sept–Oct), the ninth day of a ten-day festival.
  3. Worship and sacrifice: worship of the image, worship of the state horse, and sacrifice of buffaloes and other animals.
  4. Performances: dances, wrestling matches and processions of caparisoned horses, elephants, chariots and soldiers.
  5. Offerings and loyalty: leading nayakas and subordinate kings made ritual presentations before the king and his guests.
  6. Army review: on the last day the king inspected his army and the nayakas' armies in an open field; nayakas brought gifts and tribute.
  7. Foreign accounts: Portuguese travellers like Domingo Paes described the festival; Paes called the structure the ‘House of Victory’.
  8. Significance: the rituals displayed royal power, status and suzerainty; their deep symbolism is still debated by scholars.

Explain the main beliefs and teachings of Guru Nanak Dev.

Show Answer
Answer (English)
  1. Introduction: Baba Guru Nanak (1469–1539) was born in a Hindu merchant family at Nankana (Talwandi), Punjab; trained in Persian and accountancy, he spent time with mystics, travelled widely and set up a centre at Kartarpur.
  2. Nirguna bhakti: he advocated a form of nirguna bhakti; the Absolute (rab) has no gender or form.
  3. Rejection of externals: he rejected sacrifices, ritual baths, image worship, austerities and the scriptures of both Hindus and Muslims.
  4. Remembering the Name: he proposed a simple way to connect with the Divine: remembering and repeating the Name.
  5. Shabad: he expressed his ideas in Punjabi hymns called ‘shabad’, sung in various ragas while his attendant Mardana played the rabab.
  6. Sangat: he organised followers into a community with rules for congregational worship (sangat) involving collective recitation; langar reflects the same egalitarian spirit.
  7. Equality and labour: his message stressed equality of all, honest work (kirat karni) and sharing (vand chhakna); caste had no place in it.
  8. Succession and legacy: he appointed Angad as successor, a tradition that lasted nearly 200 years. He did not intend a new religion, but his followers consolidated a distinct identity; Guru Arjan compiled his hymns in the Adi Granth, and Guru Gobind Singh founded the Khalsa in 1699.

‘Mirabai was a well-known poet of the North Indian Hindu tradition.’ Explain her philosophy and beliefs.

Show Answer
Answer (English)

  3. Devotion to Krishna: she defied her husband and refused the role of submissive wife, recognising Krishna, avatar of Vishnu, as her only lover (saguna bhakti).
  4. Love and surrender: her devotion rested on intense love and surrender; her songs express love, separation and longing for Krishna.
  5. Challenging patriarchy: her in-laws tried to poison her, but she left the palace to live as a wandering singer.
  6. Defying caste: according to tradition her guru was Raidas, a leather worker, showing her defiance of caste norms.
  7. Legacy: she did not gather a sect or followers, yet she is remembered in the songs of the poor, especially ‘low’ castes and women, in Gujarat and Rajasthan.
  8. Conclusion: her life showed true devotion overriding royal status, patriarchy and caste.

Rules for monks and nuns

These are some of the rules laid down in the Vinaya Pitaka: When a new felt (blanket/rug) has been made by a bhikkhu, it is to be kept for (at least) six years. If after less than six years he should have another new felt made, regardless of whether or not he has disposed of the first, then – unless he has been authorised by the bhikkhus – it is to be forfeited and confessed.
In case a bhikkhu arriving at a family residence is presented with cakes or cooked grain-meal, he may accept two or three bowlfuls if he so desires. If he should accept more than that, it is to be confessed. Having accepted the two or three bowlfuls and having taken them from there, he is to share them among the bhikkhus. This is the proper course here.
Should any bhikkhu, having set out bedding in a lodging belonging to the sangha – or having had it set out – and then on departing neither put it away nor have it put away, or should he go without taking leave, it is to be confessed.

Explain any two rules governing the lives of bhikkhus and bhikkhunis.

(1) A new blanket/rug must be used for at least six years; making another earlier without permission means forfeiture and confession. (2) Accept no more than two or three bowls of food from a household and share it with other monks. (3) Put away bedding and take leave before leaving a sangha lodging.

Why were monks expected to share alms with other members of the sangha?

Show Answer

To maintain equality, simplicity and cooperation in the sangha, prevent hoarding or greed, and ensure all members dependent on alms were fed; it reflected non-possession and community life.

How does the Sutta Pitaka present the Buddha's teachings?

Show Answer

The Sutta Pitaka collects the Buddha's discourses, compiled by disciples at councils of ‘elders’ after his death. They take the form of simple dialogues and stories (e.g. advice to the householder Sigala), explaining suffering, its cause (desire), nibbana and the middle/eightfold path, with ethical guidance for both lay people and monks.

Tantric traditions

Often associated with the goddess were forms of worship that were classified as ‘Tantric’. Tantric practices were widespread in several parts of the subcontinent – they were open to women and men, and practitioners often ignored differences of caste and class within the ritual context. Many of these ideas influenced Shaivism as well as Buddhism, especially in the eastern, northern and southern parts of the subcontinent.

Is the Tantric tradition different from the Vedic tradition?

Show Answer

Yes. The Vedic tradition centred on sacrifices and mantras, dominated by Brahmana priests and men; Tantra was linked to goddess worship and open to women and all castes. There was sometimes tension, as Vedic followers condemned Tantric practices.

‘Tantric practices somewhat promoted the idea of an egalitarian society.’ Do you agree?

Show Answer

Yes, to an extent: they were open to men and women and ignored caste and class within rituals, though this equality was largely confined to the ritual context.

Whom did Tantric ideas influence?

Show Answer

They influenced Shaivism and Buddhism, especially in the eastern, northern and southern parts of the subcontinent, an example of the integration of local goddess traditions with Brahmanical and Buddhist traditions (as with Jagannath at Puri).

The jotedars of Dinajpur

The jotedars who cultivate large portions of land are very refractory. They know that the zamindars have no power over them. They pay only a few rupees on account of their revenue and then fall in balance almost every kist (instalment); they hold more lands than they were entitled to by their pottahs (deeds of contract). Should the zamindar's officers, in consequence, summon them to the cutcherry and detain them for one or two hours with a view to reprimand them, they immediately go and complain at the Fouzdarry Thanna (police station) for imprisonment and at the munsiff's (a judicial officer at the lower court) cutcherry for being dishonoured; and while the causes continue unsettled, they instigate the petty ryots not to pay their revenue.

How did the jotedars of Dinajpur resist the zamindars' authority?

Show Answer

They paid only a little revenue and kept arrears in almost every instalment, held more land than their pattas allowed, and complained against zamindars' officers at the police station and court.

How did the jotedars undermine the zamindars' power?

Show Answer

They incited petty ryots not to pay revenue, cutting the zamindar's income so he defaulted to the Company; their moneylending and land control in villages gave them more local power, and they sometimes bought land at zamindari auctions.

How did zamindars reprimand defiant jotedars, and with what result?

Show Answer

Zamindars' officers summoned jotedars to the cutcherry and detained them for an hour or two to reprimand them; but jotedars complained of ‘imprisonment’ and ‘dishonour’ at the police station and munsiff's court. Colonial law and courts thus curbed the zamindars' traditional coercive power, weakening them further, while the ‘sunset law’ led to many zamindari auctions.
